In a boost to India-Italy relations, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated the new premises of the Indian Embassy in Rome, Italy, on November 24, 2024, underscoring the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations. During his three-day visit, from November 24 to 26, Mr. Jaishankar lauded the shared maritime heritage of India and Italy and highlighted their pivotal role in global affairs, particularly in promoting freedom of navigation and enhancing connectivity.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Jaishankar emphasized Italy’s historical significance in India’s engagement with Europe, describing it as a gateway for commerce and cultural exchange over centuries. He noted the enduring bond between the two maritime nations and how shared commitments to maritime security and economic connectivity, such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), are shaping a transformative modern partnership. He described the IMEC as a “game-changer,” referencing its foundation during India’s G20 presidency in 2023.

The new chancery, he said, symbolizes the growing depth of India-Italy relations and is set to enhance services for the 200,000-strong Indian diaspora in Italy, whose contributions to various sectors were acknowledged by the minister. Mr. Jaishankar also took the opportunity to invite the diaspora to participate in the upcoming Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Odisha in January 2025.

During his visit, Mr. Jaishankar participated in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Outreach session in Fiuggi, representing India as a guest country, and engaged in bilateral discussions with Italian and other international counterparts. He also attended the 10th MED Mediterranean Dialogue in Rome, reaffirming India’s collaboration with Italy on regional and global challenges.

The five-year strategic action plan (2025–2029), recently unveiled during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, was a focal point of the minister’s remarks. The plan prioritizes cooperation in defence, clean energy, trade, space, and people-to-people connections, reflecting a convergence of visions and strengthened ties under Italy’s Indo-Mediterranean approach.

Mr. Jaishankar praised Prime Minister Meloni’s emphasis on strengthening ties with Asia, particularly India, noting the growing synergy in addressing global and regional issues. Highlighting India’s rapid infrastructure development and economic transformation, he urged Italian businesses to seize opportunities in India’s expanding markets.

As the minister concluded his engagements in Rome, his visit underscored the shared aspirations of India and Italy to deepen their partnership, leveraging their historical ties to forge a modern, dynamic relationship.
