India has backed UN’s “Early Warning System for All” to secure the world against climate-related disasters at the global climate conference and exhorted developed countries to speed up delivery of climate finance.
“With climate finance still scarce, climate adaptation in the form of early warning is key in securing lives and livelihoods,” said Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav at the 27th edition of the Conference Of Parties (COP27) held in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
“We would now like to maximise the full potential of Early Warning Systems for not just reducing the loss of lives but also livelihoods and national development gains,” he stressed.
The UN’s action plan for the ‘Early Warnings for All,’ unveiled by by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, calls for initial new targeted investments of USD 3.1 billion between 2023 and 2027. It is slated to cover disaster risk knowledge, observations and forecasting, preparedness and response, and communication of early warnings.
“India has come to COP27 with hopes and expectations for speedy and effective implementation of enhanced commitments by the nations to make tangible differences in the lives of the most vulnerable people,” said the minister. He stressed that India is committed towards clean and green energy sources and the National Hydrogen Mission is a step in that direction. He also highlighted India-led initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, which is “a testimony of the country’s vision to bring clean and affordable energy.” The world is on a highway to climate hell, Mr warned at the COP27 UN climate summit in Egypt on November 7. The UN chief warned world leaders that urgent action is needed on climate change, adding that “our planet is fast approaching tipping points that will make climate chaos irreversible”. “We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator.
