RIC makes pitch for setting up counter-terror front

In an attempt to enhance cooperation in combating terrorism, Russia, India and China (RIC) trilateral group pitched for setting up of a counter-terrorist front with the UN playing a central role. The three countries decided to work closely in cutting finances to terror networks besides other steps. They have also decided to step up engagement in trade and investment. In the backdrop of increased terror attacks globally, the trilateral group has decided to bolster cooperation in counter-terrorism. The RIC trilateral meeting was held in Moscow on April 18. Raising serious concerns over the threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) falling into the hands of terrorist groups, the three countries emphasised on the need to address the challenge of chemical and biological terrorism. They have decided to intensify the efforts to address these challenges. India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj stressed on the need for concerted global efforts to defeat terrorism. She warned the international community of “serious consequences” if it continues to adopt “double standards” in dealing with the menace. Coming out with a joint communique, the three countries expressed strong commitment to enhance cooperation in dealing with the threat of terrorism. They also committed to cutting line of finances to terrorist outfits. The Ministers expressed their determination to consistently strengthen cooperation between China, India and Russia in preventing and countering international terrorism, both bilaterally and tri-laterally. “They stressed that the UN has a central role in coordinating multilateral interaction against terrorism, which must be conducted in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter, as well as refugee and humanitarian law and international human rights law. They reemphasised the need to bring to justice perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of terrorist acts. They called for early conclusion of negotiations on the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism,” the statement said.
