UN@75: India invested heart & soul in success of UN

Ahead of India’s term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council next year, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar batted for reformed multilateralism and underlined that India has invested its heart and soul in the success of the UN.”As a founding member of the United Nations, India is invested with its heart and soul, right from the crafting of the principles of the UN Charter to being in the forefront of keeping its peace,” Dr Jaishankar said at an event after releasing  a new postal stamp commemorating the country’s long association with the world body on the occasion of the 75^th Anniversary of the United Nations. The stamp was released by the Department of Posts (DOP), Ministry of Communications, at a special function in New Delhi on October 23, 2020. “Reformed multilateralism has become an imperative and India will uphold the interests of the developing world to strengthen the global consensus on the key contemporary challenges,” he said,”As @UN marks its 75th Anniversary, reformed multilateralism has become an essential imperative. India will enter UNSC in January 2021 as a non-permanent member,” Mr Jaishankar tweeted.”We will uphold the interests of the developing world and seek to strengthen the global consensus on a key contemporary challenge,” he said.“As a founding member of the United Nations, India invested deeply in success of the world body and will continue to work with vigour to bring its goals and objectives closer to aspirations of the member states,” he said. India is looking forward to beginning its eighth term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. “It is important that at this historic juncture of the 75-year-long journey of the UN, we recommit ourselves to join hands and work with vigour and dedication to bring the goals and objectives of the UN closer to the aspirations of its member states, and more importantly to the aspirations of their peoples,” he said. In the past, the Department of Posts had released similar commemorative postal stamps on the UN’s 9th, 40th and 50th Anniversaries in 1954, 1985, and 1995 respectively.An exhibition has been organized themed ‘India and the UN: A Postal History’ to celebrate the occasion.Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan inaugurated the exhibit on October 24, 2020, in New Delhi, organized by the UN in India.In his remarks during the virtual event, Mr Muraleedharan highlighted India’s multifaceted contribution to the work of the United Nations over the last seven decades. Reaffirming India’s commitment to the UN, he underlined that India looks forward to working with all other nations to reform and revitalize the world body during its term at the UN Security Council from 2021-22
